Cloth Diapers 101
Prefolds - the most basic - the square diapers that your mom used. They are folded and you can use a Snappi or pins and then put a Diaper Cover over them. They are the cheapest and will last forever. There is a learning curve as you have to learn how to fold them so they won't leak. You can also use them as burp cloths or inserts for other diapers - though theyll be bulky as inserts.
Diaper Covers - basically with all diapers you need an absorbant part and a waterproof part. Prefolds, Contours and Fitteds need a cover as they're only the absorbant part. Wool soakers are also diaper covers made of wool. Which cover to choose? I think people just choose whatever they think is the cutest. Proraps are diaper service quality which means they're pretty heavy duty, but all the covers are good.
Contours - Are the next most economical. They are basically a prefold that's been cut to fit like a diaper. They dont have elastic or snaps/velcro. You can Snappi them or not, if you have a tight-fitting cover.
Fitteds - This is the absorbant part of the diaper. It is easy like a disposable but needs a cover. Thirsties makes them sized and Tiny Tush makes them One-Size
Pocket Diapers - They come in 2 parts, the outer absorbant part and an insert which makes the diaper absorbant. You can also add additional inserts for more absorbancy for overnight or outings or if your baby's a heavy wetter.Fuzzi Bunz makes snap pockets. The good thing about snaps is they're durable and will probably last longer. They don't collect lint and curl in the washer. Tiny Tush and Happy Heiny's make both snaps and velcro options. Velcro is nice because it's easy to close if you have a squirmy baby or for a babysitter/dad. Sometimes the snaps have a learning curve to get the right fit.
One-Size Diapers - are great because you only need one size throughout your baby's diaper career, hypothetically. They can be bulky on newborns, but that's just aesthetic. Tiny Tush and Happy Heiny's come in one-sized pockets. Tiny Tush makes one-sized fitteds.
All-In-One - Thirsties makes a pocket AIO, which basically means it has a sewn in insert so both the waterproof and absorbant part are built in. It's the easiest diaper and most like a disposable. It also has a pocket so you can add inserts for extra absorbancy if needed.
Which type to get? Everyone has their own preference. Each diaper is made a little differently and each baby is shaped differently. It's best to try out a few different options and see which one you like and which fits your baby best.
How many to get? Depends on how often you want to do laundry. For newborns you basically change 10-12 times/day. It depends if you want to do laundry every day, every other day or 2x/week. If you get covers, you only need 2 or 3 as they only need to be washed when they get dirty. If it's wet, just hang to dry and alternate. Then you just need to wash the absorbant diaper.
